The Medieval Studies Program at the University of California, Santa Barbara
Exploring the roots of the modern world.
The University of California, Santa Barbara, has an internationally recognized faculty in Medieval Studies, encompassing the departments of Spanish and Portuguese, English, History, History of Art and Architecture, French and Italian, Religious Studies, and East Asian Languages and Cultural Studies, as well as the interdisciplinary programs in Comparative Literature, Jewish Studies and the Center for Middle Eastern Studies.
Medieval Studies is an inherently interdisciplinary field, which integrates the study of language, literature, history, religion, philosophy, music, art, and architecture, along with contemporary forms of medievalism in literature, film, and gaming.
Our program emphasizes the Middle Ages in a global frame, from the 3rd to the 17th centuries, from Britain to Baghdad, and from Tibet to Timbuktu.
